The former greats of Vietnam and English Premier League club Manchester United didn’t miss a step during a friendly match Hanoi on Thursday at the Masters Cup.

Vietnam’s starting line-up included big names of the 1990s like Huynh Duc, Minh Hieu, Cong Minh, Hong Son and Hoang Buu.

Former United stars included Andy Cole, Ronny Johnsen and Jesper Blomqvist, who earned the Premier League club a treble (FA Cup, Premier League and European Champions League titles) in 1999.

The players have all retired from competitive football, but their unique skills pleased thousands of spectators at My Dinh Stadium as well as millions of TV viewers.

United’s veterans proved the better side and though they conceded a goal in the first half, they scored three goals in the second to take a 3-1 win.

After the match, Cole said the Vietnamese squad were a well-organized, skillful team.

Cole praised goalie Hong Pham for his excellent saves, but he refused to comment on the atmosphere at the stadium, saying “there were just a few spectators.”

The match attracted only a few thousand fans to the stadium perhaps because of the high ticket prices.

The next and final match of the tournament between Vietnam’s ex-stars and former Liverpool heroes will kick off on Friday.
