Germany will help Vietnam develop its athletics skills from now till 2013 under an agreement signed Wednesday by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism signed and the German government.

German professor Uwe Friemuth and his assistants will help Vietnam’s Athletics Federation set up a system of training coaches, seek young talents and give advice to athletes competing at national events to help them earn the greatest possible achievements. They will also help the federation garner support from different sources to develop athletics in Vietnam.

The 50-year-old professor said the most important element, even more than money, was the way development of a sport was organized.

Friemuth used to be a decathlon athlete who won gold at the Sofia Cup and the bronze medal at the European Athletics Championships in 1981. He also came fourth at the World Athletics Championships in 1983.
