Kazakhstan jump into lead in gold medal hunt

LookAtVietnam – Vitaliy Tsykunov of Kazakhstan tapped the Asian Indoor Games’s men’s high jump with a 2.22m attempt and won the first gold for his team on November 1.

The jumper tied with Majed Aldin Gazal of Syria, who also cleared the 2.22m mark, but the 22-year-old Kazakh athlete eventually beat out his rival to take the gold.

The bronze medal went to China’s Kuansong Zhao who flew over the 2.20m mark.

Vietnamese Nguyen Duy Bang, the Southeast Asian record holder, cleared the bar at 2.11m to finish fourth. Despite setting a target of 2.19-2.21m, Bang failed to clear the 2.14m in his three attemps.

Kazakh athletes also dominated in the women’s triple jump yesterday. Olga Rypakova recorded a 14.41m jump to win the gold, which was the second for her team. Teammate Irina Litvinenko came in second with a recorded 13.72m jump. Thailand’s Thitima Muangjan finished third with a 13.71m jump.

In the women’s 400m, China’s Jingwen Chen clocked a 53.58sec finish for a gold medal, beating Gulustan Mahmood Leso of Iraq (53.75) and Marina Maslyonko from Kazakhstan (54.34), who won the silver and bronze medals respectively.

Also in the spotlight yesterday was Wei Ji, who took the second gold medal of the day for China in the men’s 60m hurdles event. Wei had an outstanding performance with a 7.69sec finish. The 25-year-old runner overcame Mohammed Essa Altha wadi of Qatar and Sami Alhaydar of Saudi Arabia, who finished second and third places, respectively.

In the men’s 400m, Ismail Alsabani sprinted to 47.31secs finish to win a gold for Saudi Arabia who finished the second day of events with a gold in the men’s long jump with a strong performance from Ahmed Bin Marzouq.
