LookAtVietnam – Vietnamese martial artists won six gold medals in Vovinam or Vietnamese martial arts at the third Asian Indoor Games after two days of competition.

The real deal: Martial artists Nguyen Van Cuong and Pham Thi Phuong are Viet Nam’s first gold medal winners at the Games.

“I am very happy,” Cuong said after receiving the gold medal while her long-time partner Phuong said: “I am very proud of being the first person to win a gold medal for the country.”

Cuong grabbed his second gold medal in the same day when along with his teammates, Huynh Khac Nguyen, Nguyen Binh Dinh, and Phan Ngoc Toi, took first in the men’s attacking performance by leg event.

Vietnamese martial artists also won gold in the men’s multi-weapon performance event.

Besides winning in performance events, Viet Nam also dominated the day’s combat events. Than Lai Kim Long won the men’s 55kg fighting event and Phan Thi Ngoc Han won the women’s 55kg fighting event.

“I feel very happy now. Because Thailand could not participate in the event, Iran were rated very high in combat events, but I beat them to win the gold medal,” Linh said after the match, who also thanked his coach.

Leg show: The Vietnamese vovinam quartet won a gold medal in the men’s attack by leg event after a nearly-perfect show in HCM City on Saturday.

Vovinam is the first Vietnamese sporting event to be officially included in a continental competition.

Six countries participated in the sport and competed for 16 sets of medals at HCM City’s Military Zone 7 Gymnasium.

Athletes from Indonesia and Laos made their Vovinam debut, while Cambodia won a gold medal in the event for the first time.
