Vietnam’s leading badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh is likely to run into world number one Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open Super Series that starts on Tuesday.

Minh, ranked 8th in the world, will play 30th ranked Indonesian Tedijono Andre Kurniawan, in the first round.

If Minh, the only Vietnamese in the world’s top 100, beats Tedjono, he will face either 27th-ranked Japanese Sho Sasaki or 28th-ranked Hashim Muhammad Hafiz from Malaysia.

The draw strengthens the likelihood of Minh advancing to the quarterfinals of the event and facing Lee because the world number one has been drawn to play rivals much lower in ranking in the first two rounds.

If it happens, it will be Minh’s third encounter with Lee this year. Minh beat Lee 2-1 at the Singapore Super Series in June but lost to the Malaysian 0-2 in the World Badminton Championships in India two months later.

Minh will be the underdog again, but he could be better prepared this time, as he has been training in Singapore for the past month.
