Liem in stalemate at chess World Cup

International Grandmaster Le Quang Liem drew in first match of round one against Vladislav Tkachiev of France at the World Chess Cup taking place in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.

Liem is Viet Nam’s only representative at the tournament, which is a key event of the World Championship Cycle 2009-11.

The World Chess Federation tournament, which will finish on December 15, is a seven-round knockout event with six rounds of matches comprising two games per round. The final seventh round consists of four games.

A total purse of US$1.6 million is on offer. The event draws 128 chess players from 40 countries and territories.

Viet Nam move up in FIFA world ranking

Viet Nam jumped four places in FIFA’s November ranking after its good performances this month.

Viet Nam played well against Syria during the Asian Football Confederation Cup where they lost 0-1 in two aggregate matches which they dominated much of the time.

They had previously defeated Turkmenistan 1-0 and drew with Singapore 2-2 at the HCM City International Football Tournament.

Viet Nam now is the world’s No 130 and fourth in Southeast Asia where Thailand are still No 1, followed by Singapore and Indonesia.
