Dung wins VN Airlines Invitational; Duc wins stage, Minh stays in yellow; Khanh Hoa men take beach crown

Hoang Tien Dung from the Transviet Company won the Vietnam Airlines Invitational at the King’s Island Golf on Saturday.

The event, which began last year, saw contestants competing in five groups over the 18- hole course over a day. The national flag carrier also offered special prizes for hole-in-one scores but no-one achieved the feat.

Richard Skubel of Pratt Whitney, Vo Van Duong of the Dao Sen Course Company, and Do Van Hau of the Viet Nam Oil and Gas Group, won the first places in A, B, C, groups respectively.

Vietnam Airlines’ general director Phan Ngoc Minh expects that the tournament will become an annual event.

Duc wins stage, Minh stays in yellow

Nguyen Van Duc of An Giang Plant Protection won the last stage of the Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Cycling Tournament on Sunday.

Duc clocked a top speed of 40.16kmh over 140.3km from Tay Ninh to Hoc Mon, which he completed in three hours, 27 minutes and four seconds.

After unsuccessful race stages, Vinh Long’s Bui Lam Huynh and Domesco Dong Thap’s Nguyen Vu Linh finished second and third.

Le Nguyet Minh of Sal Gon Plant Protection 1 continued to hold the yellow jersey.

Sai Gon Plant Protection 1 led the race after four stages. Military Zone 7 team and An Giang Plant Protection team were runners-up.

The event attracted over 100 cyclists from 12 teams nationwide pedalling 653.2km over four stages. They competed in both road racing and mountain hiking for a total purse of VND120 million (US$6,700).

Khanh Hoa men take beach crown

Thanh Vinh/ Trong Quoc from Khanh Hoa beat former champions Cao Son/Minh Thien of Tanimex 2-0 in the men’s section to win the National Beach Volleyball Championship’s final round on Sunday.

The Army Corp 4’s Dong/Tuyen defeated Thanh/Vinh of Khanh Hoa 2-1 in the match to compete take third place.

On the women’s side, Truong Yen/Nguyen Mai of Hai Phong won Cam Hong/Hong Loan of Tanimex 2-0 to take the title.

Playing with all their efforts, Loan/Trong of Khanh Hoa only brought home a bronze medal after they cruised past Hai Phong’s Hau/Huyen 2-0.

The event, which kicked off in Ninh Thuan Province’s Long Thuan Resort, saw 18 men’s and 11 women’s teams participate in the event competing for a cash prize of VND70 million (US$3,700), the highest ever for the tournament.

The event’s organising board also gave the prize of best player to Khanh Hoa’s Trong Quoc and Hai Phong’s Truong Mai.
