The U23 squad will play at the 25th SEA Games without jersey No.10, as in previous games.

Coach Calisto asked Tien Thanh to wear the No.10 shirt but he refused, wanting to keep the No.13 shirt.

The number 10 shirt may have been good enough for Pele and Maradona but no member of the Vietnamese U23 national squad will wear it because they believe it to be unlucky.

Since star striker Pham Van Quyen, the owner of the No.10 jersey, was involved in the match fixing scandal at the SEA Games 2005 in the Philippines, the jersey has been said to bring bad luck to anyone who wears it.

In 2006, Huynh Phuc Hiep wore this jersey for the U23 team and played well but when the SEA Games 2007 was approaching Hiep’s form suddenly dipped and he was left out of the team by coach Alfred Riedl.

After Hiep, Tang Tuan next wore the jersey when he was called up to the team by coach Henrique Calisto. However, Tuan had to say goodbye to the team when Calisto finalized the team before heading to Laos.

The team’s stars such as captain Thanh Luong registered number 19, Trong Hoang No.8, Thanh Hung No.28, Mai Tien Thanh No.13 and and Thanh Binh No.18.
