Vietnam’s U23 squad beat mighty China 3-1 on Saturday to win the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Cup regardless of the result of their final match against Thailand on Monday.

With only three teams in the fray in the friendly tournament, the hosts beat Singapore in their first match despite a patchy performance.

It was more confident display on Saturday as the underdog tag did not seem to bother the Vietnamese players as they took on regional giant China.

Vietnam took the lead after 10 minutes when striker Mai Tien Thanh fired home a deflection from a Chinese defender.

The early goal caused China to fight back fiercely but Vietnam’s defence was not breached. Sriker Thanh Binh missed a clear chance to double the score five minutes from the interval.

Vietnam continued to attack in the second half and Thanh Luong found the net just 13 minutes after the break.

China did not give up trying to turn the tables, and their relentless attacks were with free kick that Zhang Linpeng used to pull one back for his team.

Even as China searched for the equalizer, Trong Hoang dashed all hopes with a goal in injury time.
