Despite a sub-par show, Vietnam’s Under-23 squad took a 1-0 win over Singapore in the opener of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Cup at My Dinh Stadium on Thursday.

Though they won the match, the home side often looked confused and made more than a few excruciating mistakes.

Singapore counterattacked on the Vietnamese follies and tallied more ball possession time, but failed to convert several chances.

Striker Thanh Binh’s first half goal was the game’s only real excitement.

The Vietnamese U23s will have a harder battle against China on Saturday before facing Thailand on the final day of the friendly tournament Monday.
