Vietnam’s U19 squad suffered a 0-1 defeat to Thailand in Bangkok Sunday at the qualifying round of the 2010 Asian Under-19 Football Championship.

Vietnam needed a draw with Thailand to ensure a berth in the final tournament next year but R. Chakrit’s second half header made qualification a long shot for the Vietnamese teenagers.

In other action, South Korea beat Laos 6-0 to match Vietnam at nine points. But the Koreans remained in third place because of a 0-1 loss to Vietnam on Friday.

Thailand is now on top of Group E with 12 points. South Korea will accompany Thailand to the finals even if it can beat the Thais by a score of 2-1 or better on the final day of the qualifying round on Wednesday.

If South Korea beats Thailand 1-0, Vietnam will qualify only if it can overtake Korea on goal difference, which will require it to beat Macau by a margin of four goals in their final match. If South Korea loses to Thailand, Vietnam will advance.
