LookAtVietnam – Bui Minh Thuy pedalled to gold in the men’s mass start individual cycling event at the 25th SEA Games in Laos.

Thuy completed the 156.6km race in 4hr 1.42min, more than a minute faster than silver medallist Mai Nguyen Hung, also of Viet Nam.

The bronze medal went to Mohd Zamri Saleh of Malaysia.

“I feel very happy now because this is the first gold medal Vietnamese cyclists has won in this event at a SEA Games after many years’ wait,” Thuy said after the race.

Coach Tran Van Quyt said: “It’s really wonderful achievement. This is the first time Viet Nam has won both gold and silver medals in the cycling competition at a SEA Games.”

In the women’s competition, Phan Thi Thuy Trang won bronze in the 116.1km mass start individual event when she finished the race with a time of 3:36.33.

The gold and silver medals went to Jutatip Maneephan of Thailand and Malaysian Nor Azian Alias respectively.

Other sports

Doan Kien Quoc and Dinh Quang Linh helped Viet Nam win a SEA Games’ gold medal in the men’s doubles event.

The duo defeated their teammates Nguyen Nam Hai and Tran Tuan Quynh 11-7, 7-11, 11-4, 11-7 in the final match yesterday, December 14.

Previously, Viet Nam won a men’s individual gold in 1997 in Indonesia.

Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai won Viet Nam’s first gold medal in Muay after beating Konnica Nuanboriboon of Thailand in the women’s fly weight final at Beung Kha Ngong Sport Centre.

“I am too happy because I have won the country’s first gold medal in Muay at a SEA Games,” Mai said after a convincing victory.

In the men’s welter weight final, Bui Huynh Giang had to settle for a silver medal after being beaten by Sakdithat Sakdarat of Thailand.
