Female footballers eye SEA Games gold; Taekwondo athletes win two medals at World tourney; Injured referee Hien to miss SEA Games action

The national women’s football team arrived at Wattay Airport in Laos yesterday, December 2, and were warmly welcomed by hundreds of Vietnamese expats living in Vientiane.

At the 25th Southeast Asian Games in Laos, Vietnamese players will be looking to dethrone Thailand.

Viet Nam will meet Malaysia at the National University Stadium on Sunday.

Five teams have entered the women’s football event - Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Viet Nam and Laos.

Viet Nam has won the SEA Games football trophy three times, in 2001, 2003 and 2005.

Taekwondo athletes win two medals at World tourney

Vietnamese taekwondo martial artists won a silver and a bronze medal at the World Taekwondo Championship in Cairo, Egypt.

Le Anh Minh bagged the silver medal in the men’s under-19 category, while Nguyen Minh Tu pocketed a bronze in the women’s under-19 performance event.

The eight-member squad are looking to win five medals at the SEA Games next Wednesday.

Injured referee Hien to miss SEA Games action

Vietnamese referee Duong Van Hien will miss the chance to officiate at the SEA Games due to injury.

Hien, a FIFA-accredited referee, tore a knee ligament during a training session organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Tuesday.

The 43-year-old referee will need an operation, hospital doctors in Vientiane said. The Viet Nam Football Federation plans to send FIFA referee Vo Minh Tri to take Hien’s place.

Terrain cyclists practice ahead of big race

Viet Nam’s terrain cycling team will have four days of track practice before the event next Wednesday and Thursday.

Teams from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Laos and Viet Nam will be competing for two gold medal sets in the downhill and country-cross events.
