Nguyen Tien Minh.
Viet Nam’s top badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh has fallen out of the world top ten just days before the SEA Games’ opening ceremony.

Minh, who has not taken part in an international tournament since the Hong Kong Open last month, was formerly the world’s seventh best player.

Minh, who is now seeded 11, is the SEA Games’ No 2. He will face Nuon Sophorn of Cambodia in the first round.

He is Viet Nam’s sole medal hope in badminton.

Park wins Gentlemen’s Invitational

South Korea’s Park Jun-jin triumphed at the third Gentlemen’s Invitational Golf Tournament on Sunday at Vinh Phuc Province’s Tam Dap Golf and Resort.

Viet Nam’s Luu Hai Ninh took the prize for the furthest drive, while Sandip Rakhit won the nearest to the pin award.

The organisers of the annual tournament, which attracted more than 100 golfers, also gave prizes to winners of three groups whose handicaps ranged from 0-36.

Organisers of the tournament, which is hosted by the Sports&Culture newspaper and Men magazine, donated VND20 million (US$1,050) to the Vietnam News Agency’s Fund for Agent Orange Victims.

Da Lat’s golf course voted best in VN

The Da Lat Palace Golf Club in the central province of Lam Dong won the Best Course in Viet Nam award for the second consecutive year after a vote organised by Vietnam Golf magazine.

Organisers said nearly 30,000 readers participated in the vote, which was launched in June. Ten judges from the Viet Nam Golf Association and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, based their decision on the readers’ comments.

There were also awards for the golf courses with the best landscape (King’s Island), the best service (Soc Son), the best challenge (SeaLinks), the best design and the most environmentally friendly (Van Tri).

Sony joins Terry Fox Run

The Run for Children or Terry Fox Run yesterday, December 7, attracted more than 7,000 staff and employees from different companies and business firms in HCM City including those from Sony Electronics Viet Nam.

The run has become an annual event and the largest single-day fundraiser for cancer research in the world. Sony donated VND40 million to the fund.

All profits this year will be used to help disadvantaged children with cancer and heart disease, with funds going to the Ha Noi Heart Hospital, the National Hospital of Paediatrics and Heart Beat Viet Nam.

Last year, 7,000 participants helped raise more than VND500 million (US$26,000) for charity in Viet Nam.
