Viet Nam Under-23 need only one point from their last group match against Cambodia later this week to grab a group A ticket to enter the football semi-finals at the SEA Games.

Viet Nam’s coach Henrique Calisto devoted most of his time on Monday to studying these two teams in action. He said both presented Viet Nam with a formidable challenge.

Calisto said that Laos, who achieved a surprise 2-0 win over Indonesia two days ago, would be a difficult opponent for any team if they can maintain their recent form. Laos, who has shed their underdog status during previous SEA Games, have showed what they can lift their game physically as well as tactically. They are al the top of their group with four points. During their previous match, they levelled with Myanmar 2-2.

Calisto said the match between Laos and Indonesia was impressive, with the Lao players putting on a seemingly indefatigable performance.

“I am surprised with what Laos can do,” said Calisto. “I didn’t think they could play such a good game, but they were very smart and disciplined. Their forwards are sharp and effective.

“If Laos can make the semi-finals and end up playing Viet Nam, it would not be an easy match for us, especially as they are the hosts.”

The Portuguese coach said he singled out three Lao players as especially dangerous - half- back Kaysone Soukhavong, strikers Khampheng Sayyavutth and Lamnao Singto.

“They played very well on Monday,” said Calisto. “Singto is the only Lao player that hasn’t played in a national football tournament. He usually wears the Thailand Electricity team jersey.”

While Laos moved tantalisingly close to the semi-finals with their victory against Indonesia, they still need to earn one point during their match against Singapore.

Calisto said Singapore were also a tough team, which has often caused trouble for Viet Nam.

“Singapore have progressed, mostly in terms of tactics, a lot since last October’s Viet Nam Football Federation matches,” said Calisto.

“Their players are always in good form and they are experts in counter-attacks.”

During these SEA Games, Singapore have been using a 1-5-4 formation, which places the focus on a strong defence.

“It is clear that they are still an obstacle for us,” said Calisto.

“They play the same formation as us, but their larger half-backs who are stronger and taller will not leave many chances for us to play high balls.”
