Vietnam won the women’s gold medal while India A grabbed the men’s gold medal at the Asian Chess Championships on Monday.

Vietnamese women Le Thanh Tu, Pham Le Thao Nguyen, Nguyen Thi Thanh An and Nguyen Thi Mai Hung beat Nepal 4-0 in the final round of the contest to earn the gold with a total 11 points in Kolkata, India.

The India A women team ended with 10 points to take the silver medal, ahead of Iran, who took the bronze with nine points.

The India B women tied Iran with nine points but were put in fourth place after losing a tiebreaker to their Persian rivals.

In the men’s section, India A men grabbed the gold medal with 14 points.

Vietnam took the silver while the bronze went to Iran. Vietnam and Iran had the same amount of points but Vietnam won the tiebreaker.

The Tata Steel Asian Chess Championships 2009 event, which began on December 20, was organized by Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy & All Sport Management.
