Vietnam tops medal table with 14 golds

Vietnamese athletes grabbed another eight gold medals on the third day of the 25th Southeast Asian Games in Vientiane to top the table with 14 golds.

Nguyen Thanh Dam in the women’s field bicycle race, Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu in the women’s taekwondo 57kg category, Hoang Xuan Vinh in shooting, Hoang Thanh Tra in the women’s springboard diving and Nguyen Thi Hien in the women’s singles petanque all won gold medals on Friday.

Nguyen Ngoc Thanh in the men’s karatedo kumite 67kg category, Bui Thi Trieu in the women’s karatedo kumite 61kg category and swimmer Nguyen Huu Viet in the men’s 100m breaststroke were the other Vietnamese athletes to win gold.

Viet clocked a minute and 1.60 seconds, ahead of Indonesian Indra Gunawan and Thai Vorrawuti who finished with timings of one minute 1.90 seconds and one minute 2.60 seconds respectively.

Vietnam leads the medal tally with 14 gold, 10 silver and 10 bronze medals while Thailand is in second place with 13 gold, 21 silver and 16 bronze medals. Singapore is third with 12 gold, six silver and 12 bronze medals.

The 25th SEA Games started on December 9 and will close on December 18.
