‘Sprint Queen’ becomes Athlete of the Year

Top sprinter Vu Thi Huong was voted Vietnam’s Athlete of the Year by sports journalists nationwide on Thursday.

Huong beat 75 other nominees for the honor.

Huong, born in 1986, won four gold medals in the women’s 100m, 200m, 4×100m and 4×200m races at the National Athletics Championships in September.

At the third Asian Indoor Games in October, hosted by Vietnam, Huong grabbed the gold medal in the women’s 60m race.

Huong also took two silver medals in the women’s 100m and 200m races at the Asian Athletics Championships in Guangzhou in November.

And at the 25th South East Asian Games in Laos last month, Huong earned two golds in the women’s 100m and 200m contests while also taking the silver medal in the women’s 4×100m competition.

Swimmer Nguyen Huu Viet, who snatched the gold medal in the men’s 100m breaststroke at the SEA Games, came in second in the voting.

Truong Thanh Hang, who successfully defended her titles in the women’s 800m and 1,500m races in the track and field event at the 25th SEA Games, came in third.
