Nguyen Tien Minh moved into the second round of the VICTOR Korea Open Super Series in Seoul on Wednesday with a hard fought 2-0 victory over Joachim Persson of Denmark.

The 11th-ranked Minh had some difficulty in counterattacking the 18th-ranked Danish player who was bigger and had more powerful smashes.

At 17-17 in the first set, Persson scored three consecutive points to lead 20-17 and needed just one more point to take the set.

However, Minh kept calm and scored five consecutive points to win the first set 22-20.

The first set victory boosted Minh’s spirits and he went on to win the second 21-16.

In the second round, Minh will face rising star Pengyu Du from China who is currently ranked 32nd in the world.

Despite the lower ranking, the Chinese player is predicted to be a big challenge for Minh because it took Pengyu just one year to jump to that position while it took Minh almost five years.

The January 12-17 competition in Seoul, which offers a total of US$300,000 in cash prizes, has attracted major players including world number one Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia.
