Taekwondo artists to train for Youth Olympic Qualifiers; China to play against Vietnam on January 14; Liem, Son makes world top 20; Marathon returns to capital; VFF to fine players for faking it The national youth taekwondo team will have a one-month training course overseas in preparation for the Youth Olympics 2010’s qualifying round in Mexico in March. Though the destination for training has not been decided yet, it is likely to be China or the Republic of Korea (RoK). Six out of ten team members will be chosen for the competition in Mexico. It is the first time Vietnam will take part in this event, says Vu Xuan Thanh, head of the taekwondo department of the National Sports and Physical Training Administration. Apart from the Rok, the cradle of the sports, China and Chinese Taipei are also strong, he says adding that it is not easy for Vietnam to get a ticket to the main event which will take place in Singapore later this year. China to play against Vietnam on January 14 The China national football team will arrive in Hanoi on January 14 for its last group match against Vietnam at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup’s qualifiers. Coming back from the 1-1 match against Lebanon, the Vietnam national team, will have two days off before gathering again on January 11 to prepare for the game. China now ranks second in group D with 10 points, following Syria with 11 points and Vietnam ranks third with five points. China and Syria will represent group D in the AFC Cup 2011 in Qatar. Liem, Son makes world top 20 Vietnamese young chess masters Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son have make it back into the world top 20 young players, according to the latest figures from the International Chess Federation (FIDE). Liem won the Viet Nam, India and China opens last year. Earlier, he pocketed a team gold and a silver medal at the third Asian Indoor Games in Viet Nam last November. Liem is also among the world top 100 adult players in January’s rankings. Marathon returns to capital The Tien Phong newspaper marathon will return to Ha Noi this year after travelling south for the last few editions. The annual tournament, this year around Hoan Kiem Lake, will kick off in March. Among the strongest competitors will be defending champion Pham Thi Hien, SEA Games participant Truong Thanh Hang and Pham Thi Binh. On the men’s side, leading contenders will be former champ Nguyen Chi Dong, veteran Nguyen Van Sy and Nguyen Dang Duc Bao. VFF to fine players for faking it Players who deliberately waste time during football matches will be subject to heavy fines, according to the Viet Nam Football Federation (VFF). Under the new regulation, which comes into effect this season, players face fines of up to VND3 million (US$160) and match bans if they feign injury or participate in other ungentlemanly conduct. The VFF said fines for yellow and red cards would also be raised. Vietnamese Women’s Chess ranks 22nd in the world Vietnam is placed 22nd in the world women’s chess rankings with international Grand Masters and six masters and an average Elo rating of 2251, according to the World Chess Federation (FIDE). In Asia, the Vietnamese Women’s Chess team ranks third after China and India which are among the world’s top ten countries. In the Asian Team Chess Championship which took place in Kolkota, India in late 2009, the Vietnamese women’s team won the gold medal after defeating the host country.
