Hanoi T&T’s Le Cong Vinh on March 24 asked the Vietnam Football Federation to reconsider its fine of sitting out six matches for his bad behavior at a match on Sunday, March 21.

One day after the VFF announced its penalty, Hanoi T&T also made public its fine on striker Cong Vinh. The striker will lose his position as team captain, give up three months of bonuses and pay a 50 million dong fine for prostrating himself before a referee in the match against Dong Thap.

Cong Vinh submitted his petition to the VFF, asking the federation for a lesser punishment. In his petition, Cong Vinh admitted his mistake and argued that his reaction was spontaneous and uncontrollable. Before the scandal, Vinh was a good player who contributed much to the national squad. Vinh is the holder of three Vietnam Golden Ball Awards, as well as a Silver and a Bronze Ball Awards.

Hanoi T&T club also sent a petition supporting the striker’s request for relief. According to the club, Cong Vinh’s behaviour doesn’t merit the VFF’s heavy fine, which is imposed on impolite acts against referees. Vinh’s act should be considered as an excessive response, equal to suspension for two matches and a 5 million dong fine.

Cong Vinh said he was not surprised when the club dismissed him from the captain position. “I felt something missing after I learned of VFF’s penalty, so I’m not appropriate for the captain position. I even thought of resigning from the position,” Vinh admitted.

Goalkeeper Duong Hong Son will be the new captain of Hanoi T&T.
