Do Tuan Anh produced a top-class solo performance to ride to victory 100m after completing the notoriously difficult Ngang Pass climb yesterday, April 13, . . .
The Domesco Dong Thap rider completed 190km track from the central city of Vinh to Quang Binh Province’s Dong Hoi Town in 5hr 12.59min with an average speed of 38.62km per hour. Ngang Pass was the first stage where cyclists could collect points for the King of Mountain title. Mai Nguyen Hung of Sai Gon Plant Protection 1 was the first to reach the peak of the 3km hill. With his experience and good physique, Hung passed Anh and Trinh Phat Dat from An Giang Plant Protection over the last few metres to take the first three points for the red jersey. Meanwhile the yellow jersey remained with Bui Minh Thuy of the Vinh Long Television team whose total time was 13:02.12 after four stages. Thuy was among five racers who separated from the peloton to climb Ngang Pass but he failed to break through in the final stages, failing to finish in the top three with the rest of the pack. Despite that, he still managed to clock a 2sec lead over his rival for the yellow jersey, Tuguldur Tuulkhangai of Mongolia. Hung who performed very well yesterday as the third finisher stole back his third place overall from Tran Van Quyen of the Army team who triumphed in Monday’s third stage. Hung needed 17sec to level with the tour leader. In the team rankings, Vinh Long Television remained comfortable in top position for the fourth stage in a row. Thuy’s success helped them strengthen their leading position with a total time of 39:07.56. Second and third were Mongolia and the improving Sai Gon Plant Protection 1 who both followed, 10sec behind. Today’s fifth stage will cover the 183km from Dong Hoi to Hue city City. The tournament, which is one of the activities to celebrate National Liberation Day, attracted 84 local and foreign contestants. They will compete for bonuses of VND500 million (US$26,000) after racing in 17 stages from north to south. The nation’s biggest cycling competition will conclude on April 30 at HCM City’s Thong Nhat Palace.
