Viet Nam’s futsal (indoor football) coach Sergio Gargelli insisted that his team would win the tournament in spite of losing 2-1 to Indonesia in the fourth match day of the ASEAN Football Federation Futsal championships.

“Our goal is to win the tournament and I believe that we will play well against Malaysia today to reach the final and win it,” the Italian coach said after the match.

A draw against Malaysia today is enough for the host to reach the final for the second time in a row.

Huynh Ba Tuan opened the score for the home team, but Angga Surya Saputra and Sayan Karmadi each scored one to help Indonesia seal a 2-1 win at Phu Tho Gymnasium in HCM City.

This third successive victory in the tournament gave Indonesia nine points, enough to book a berth in the final, although they still have a match in hand today.

The loss dropped Viet Nam to second place with six points after three matches, above third-placed Malaysia, thanks to a superior goal difference. Malaysia beat Myanmar 2-0 in the previous game of the day.

The remaining berth will be decided today when Viet Nam faces Malaysia in the last preliminary match of the round robin tournament.

Darius Sinathrya, Indonesia’s team manager, said, “I believe Viet Nam will overcome Malaysia today to set up a rematch against Indonesia in the final.”
