The goal of the women’s team is defending their bronze medal won at the 7th Asian Tug of War Championship in Macau in 2008 during its first time at the tournament. The men’s team ranked fourth after Japan, Taiwan and Malaysia in 2008.

The event will draw 12 male and 10 female teams, playing in round-robin to choose the top four teams for the semifinals and then finals.

Vietnam began taking part in international tug of war competitions in 2006 and the Asian Tug of War Federation praised Vietnam as a strong team. Vietnam is the 52nd member of the International Tug of War Federation.

The rules of international tug of war are different from Vietnamese folk tug of war. Teams play in weight category. Each team has eight members. There are 13 types of errors. A game includes two sets and three sets for semi-final and final matches.

Tug of war was a sport at Olympic from 1890 to 1920. The UK, the host of Olympic 2012, is calling for adding tug of war to the Olympics again.
