Vietnamese show off chess hobby in Germany
Xiangqi or Chinese chess, a popular pastime of Vietnamese people, has been introduced for the first time at the 2010 Summer Festival that took place in Berlin from June 18-20.
The festival, jointly held by leftist party Die Linke and newspaper Neues Deutschland, drew the participation of hundreds of Germans and expatriates in the European country.
Festival organizers said they hope the game introduction will help German friends know more about Vietnamese people’s spiritual and cultural life, thus boosting the ties between the two countries.
At the festival, Vietnamese who live in Leipzig and Berlin taught visitors how to play this kind of game and compare it with the international chess, a game familiar with westerners.
Speaking at the festival, Pham Van Toan, First Secretary of the Vietnamese Embassy in Germany, affirmed that the ties between Vietnam and Germany are developing well and a series of events will be held this year to celebrate the 35th anniversary of their bilateral diplomatic relationship.
7th national archery champs opens in Hanoi
80 archers and 18 trainers from 8 well known teams including Hai Phong, Phu Tho, Hung Yen, Bac Kan, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Thanh Hoa, and the Military team will compete at a archery championship which are being held at the National Shooting Range on June 22.
The competitors will compete in the men’s and women’s individual and team events for the compound (three-string) bow and the recurve (one-string) bow events.
The seventh “nationwide outstanding archers” championships, which is being held by the Vietnam Shooting Federation and the General Department of Sports and Physical training, will last until June 27.
Quang Ngai hosts national motorbike race champs
As many as 24 racers from Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, An Giang, Can Tho, Vinh Long, Ho Chi Minh City and Quang Ngai competed for the professional 125cc motorbike championships in the south central province Quang Ngai on June 20.
After competing 3 laps of 9.6km, Ho Chi Minh’s Nguyen Quang Khai won the champion title, the runner-up was Nguyen Thanh Vu and third place went to Luu Thanh Tuan and Nguyen Viet Linh.
The championships was jointly held by the Vietnam Motor and Bicycle Sports Association and the Quang Ngai provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Vietnam qualified for Youth Olympic Games
Vietnamese has twelve athletes qualified for the Youth Olympic Games 2010 to be held in Singapore in August.
The national team consists of those athletes from six disciplines, six coaches, one three assistants and one leader.
Vietnam has pinned its hopes on weightlifting, athletics and taekwondo.
Competition will provide an opportunity for young athletes to prepare for the Asian Games and other upcoming events.
Junior footballers failed to reach Coca Cola 2010 semi final
Young Vietnamese footballers lost their chance to play in the semi final of the Coca Cola 2010 tournament in South Africa after being defeated in two group matches on June 17.
In the match against Turkey, Vietnam lost 0-5 and was thrashed 0-7 by Russia in the next match.
On June 18, the Vietnamese players had a chance to explore the 2010 World Cup’s host country during their visit to the wildlife zoo.
