K+, a digital television channel, has obtained exclusive broadcasting rights for seven major world football tournaments.

Accordingly, all matches of Spain’s football championship (La Liga), Italy’s football championship (Seria A) and matches on Sunday of Britain’s Barclays English Premier League will be only broadcast on K+, owned by VSTV Company, which is a joint-venture between Vietnam Television (VTV) and Canal+/Canal Overseas.

VSTV currently holds the broadcasting rights for Barclays English Premier League, La Liga, Seria A, Champions League (C1 Cup), Europa League (C3 Cup), French Football League 1 (Ligue 1) and America’s MLS.

VSTV now has rights to broadcast exclusively all matches of Barclays English Premier League in Vietnam for three consecutive seasons and Sunday matches will only be aired in Vietnam on the K+ channel.

A VSTV representative told Tuoi Tre that, except for Seria A, La Liga and the Sunday matches of Barclays English Premier League, other TV channels can broadcast the remaining football tourneys if they buy the rights.

Football fans must become subscribers to K+ to see the games, which requires purchase of a receiver worth 1.5 million dong and 1.53 million dong in fees every six months. An initial total investment of 3 million dong (nearly $200) is quite expensive for many people.

At the same time, VTC announced its purchase of broadcasting rights for Barclays English Premier League’s matches on Saturday for three consecutive seasons, using high-definition technology. To watch these games, viewers must use VTC HD service, which requires purchase of an HD receiver worth 4.6 million and one of four service packages with charges ranging from 1.2 million to 2 million dong per year.
