Deputy PM Trong meets Vietnamese team at ASIAD Deputy PM Trong, who was accompanied by Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh, Vietnamese Ambassador to China Nguyen Van Tho and other high-ranking officials, attended the opening of the Asia’s biggest sports festival on Nov. 12. The Deputy PM encouraged the Vietnamese athletes to try their best to achieve good results at the festival. Le Quy Phuong, head of the Vietnamese delegation, briefed Deputy PM Trong of the delegation’s preparations for each game and promised to spare no efforts to bring home victory. The Vietnamese sport delegation includes badminton, billiards and snooker, chess, weightlifting and table tennis and volleyball contestants. The contestants will join football and shooting teams who arrived before opening ceremony. Swimmers, judo and wushu martial artists, dancers and separk takraw players will arrive in the city from training abroad. Hanoi hosts first International Futsal champs In the first round of the tournament, the host will face Thailand at Quan Ngua Sport Complex. Under the leadership of Italian head coach Sergio Gargelli, the Vietnamese team has improved rapidly and is now in the top 10 of the 2010 Asian Futsal Rankings. The head coach confirmed his determination that his team will reach the top 5 in Asia and will get a ticket to the 2010 World Cup. Vietnam to participate in Pattaya Traditional Boat Race Festival Eight teams from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam and host Thailand will compete in the 500m event in 12-rower boats. The race is considered a good opportunity for Vietnam’s team, consisting of 14 members, to get more experience in preparation for the 26th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Indonesia next year. The festival will also help to promote friendship and cooperation among rowing and canoeing associations in the region. More than 1,000 athletes at the 16th ASIAD athletes’ village Delegates from several countries are already present at the villages, including Afghanistan, India, Japan, Malaysia, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and the host, China. The remainder of the participants are also expected to arrive in the next days, said the organising board. During the games running November 12-27, 15,000 athletes, coaches and officials from 45 countries and territories will stay at the village, which has 49 buildings with 3,598 flats, 9,272 rooms and 24 cooking and drink and entertainment venues.
