Vietnam takes first gold medal at Asian Games

Vietnamese karateka Le Bich Phuong won the gold medal for women’s under 55kg category this afternoon, November 25.

Phuong won three consecutive games (4-0 against a Korean rival, 3-1 against a Uzbekistani rival and 8-0 against an athlete from Macau) this morning to enter the finals.

In the final game at 4:20pm, Phuong defeated the current champion from Japan – Kobayashi Miki - taking the gold medal.

Female wrestler Nguyen Thi Lua, 19, was the winner in the semi-final of women’s 48kg category today. The final game will take place at 6:10pm, November 25. Lua won an Asian bronze medal, two silver medal at the Asian Youth Wrestling Championship 2007 and 2008.

Runner Vu Thi Huong won a silver medal for women’s 200m race today, after winning a bronze medal for women’s 100m category. Runner Truong Thanh Hang also took her second silver medal today for women’s 800m race after winning a silver medal for women’s 1500m race.

Vu Van Huyen is expected to win a silver medal for men’s decathlon. He ranks second after eight competitions, with 6347 points, bellowed an athlete from Kazakhstan.

So far, Vietnam has won one gold, 15 silver and 13 bronze medals.

Among Southeast Asian countries, Thailand takes the lead with nine gold medals, followed by Malaysia with eight gold medals.
