The Singaporean
Football Federation Chair Zainudin Nordin proposed that Southeast Asian
countries co-host the World Cup 2030 but the Vietnam Football Federation’s
Secretary General Tran Quoc Tuan says that Vietnam cannot co-host the World
Cup.

On
todayonline.com, Zainudin Nordin recommended the idea that Southeast Asian
countries compete for hosting the World Cup 2030 to promote the region’s image
and to show the unity inside the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

However,
VFF Secretary General Tran Quoc Tuan told Tien Phong Daily that this is
Zainudin Nordin’s personal idea, which has not been discussed at meetings of
the Southeast Asian Football Council.

Tuan explained
that it was complicated to host the World Cup. Moreover, the standards of the facilities
of Vietnam
and Southeast Asian nations are not sufficient host the world’s largest
football game.

Tuan asked,
that if ASEAN wins the right to host this event, which country would be the representative host nation? Not all ten Southeast Asian
countries will be allowed to be the hosts
because the World Cup admits only 4-5 Asian teams.

If ten
Southeast Asian countries make a common team, this would be contrary to FIFA
rules.

So far, the
World Cup has been hosted by single countries, except for Japan and South Korea in 2002. This model was
questioned in terms of its effectiveness and after that the FIFA didn’t allow
countries to co-host the World Cup. The failure of Spain-Portugal and the Netherlands-Belgium
at the competition for hosting World Cup 2018 and 2022 are clear evidence.

The idea of
Zainudin Nordin is good but it is unfeasible. For Vietnamese, it is a distant
dream to watch the world’s largest football game at home.
