The 9th Vovinam Championships closed in Algiers City, Algeria on January 28, in the presence of the Vietnamese ambassador to Algeria, Do Trong Cuong, and many high-ranking sports officials.

On the occasion, the Algerian martial arts federation delivered an insignia to Ambassador Do Trong Cuong for his contribution to developing Vovinam in Algeria.

The tournament this year drew 580 athletes, including 45 women, from 80 clubs representing 22 provinces and cities in Algeria. Athletes competed in 25 events supported by the enthusiasm of hundreds of fans.

The first Vovinam club was established in the Hydra district of Algiers City in 2001, then spread to 30 cities and provinces throughout Algeria. Now the country has about 7,000 people aged 14-52 taking part in the sport.

Many young athletes of Algeria are attracted to Vovinam because of the flexibility and strength in both movement and spirit.

In the World Vovinam Championships held in Germany last year, the Algerian national team won 22 medals, earning second place behind the French team.
