Nguyen Hoang Thien (R) has won a doubles title in New Zealand

Vietnam’s teenage tennis sensation Nguyen Hoang Thien and Australian Jack Schipanshi won the boys’ doubles title at the ITF Junior Grade 4 Under-18 Circuit event in Wellington, New Zealand on Friday.

The top-seeded duo of Thien and Schipanski beat Australian pair Bradley Mousley and Li Tu 6-3, 6-0 in the final match.

In the boys’ singles, 241st-ranked Hoang Thien was swept aside in the semifinals, losing 3-6, 3-6 to Schipanski.

In the ITF Under-18 events, Grade A is the highest, and other categories range from Grade 1 to Grade 5. In 2010, Thien won two boys’ singles Grade 5 championships in Vietnam.

Though the event Thien participated in New Zealand this time was in Grade 4, it attracted several junior players in the world’s top 200 like Jaden Grinter of New Zealand, Australia’s Schipanski and Saito Takashi of Japan.

Thien’s performance in the tournament has earned him 30 points in the doubles and 20 points in the singles rankings, taking him seven places up to the 234th position.
