Doan Kien Quoc has made it to the last 32 places at the ongoing 2011 World Table Tennis Championships taking place in Rotterdam, the Netherlands from May 8-15.

In the first qualifying round, the 254th-ranked Quoc competed in the 43rd group among 102 groups of three players each. He topped the group after beating Cameroonian player Noah Essomba Hubert 4-1 before thrashing Icelander David Jonsson in straight sets.

In the next qualifying round, 128 players fought for 32 berths in the first round. Quoc didn’t have to play the first match because his Thai rival Chaitat Chaisit retired.

In the second match, he struggled before beating 194th-ranked Icelander Stephensen Gudmundur 14-12, 12-10, 2-11, 11-8, 7-11, 6-11, 11-9.

Quoc’s first opponent in the first round is Croatian Gacina Andrej, who is ranked 53rd in the world. It will be a very hard match, but fans are hoping he can spring a surprise.

Quoc also previously made to his way to the last 32 in 2009 before lost in straight sets to Cheung Yuk of Hong Kong.

In the men’s doubles, Kien Quoc and Tuan Quynh have also qualified for the first round where they will meet Cheung Yuk - Li Ching from Hong Kong.

Earlier, Tuan Quynh, Dinh Quang Linh and Nguyen Thanh Luân were all swept aside in the qualifying round of the men’s singles while the duo Quang Linh-Thanh Luan also fell at the first hurdle.
