After two months of probation, the Brazilian coach of the Vietnam national men’s volleyball squad – Augusto Sabbatini – has to return home for failing to meet the team’s requirement.

The Vietnam Federation of Volleyball (VFV) said it would continue seeking a foreign coach for the national team to prepare for the Southeast Asian Games 2011 (SEA Games).

VFV Secretary Geneeral Tran Duc Phan said: “The federation’s target is seeking a foreign coach to lead the national team at the SEA Games. At this moment, we are learning about a Chinese coach. If there are no changes, the coach will be tested as soon as possible”.

VFV’s biggest concern is how to evaluate the expertise of foreign coaches.

The Brazilian coach, Augustino Sabbatini had to leave Vietnam for many reasons. The coach was highly appreciated for coming from a highly-develop volleyball country and for his experience in leading some national volleyball teams in Central and Southern Asia. He nominated himself to the VFV. The association also laid great expectations on him. Yet he failed to show off his expertise during the two months of probation, while he claimed high salary and other conditions.

If the persists to recruit a foreign coach for the men’s squad, the VFV must be very careful in seeking information and testing foreign nominees. The federation does not have much time for this because the SEA Games will take place in November.

At the moment, Vietnamese coach Nguyen Manh Hung will be in charge of the men’s team. Hung is considered the optimal choice at this time because he has worked with the team for years.
