This is the highest achievement ever recorded by Vietnam in the history of Olympiads.

In the individual event, GM Le Quang Liem ranked 5^th, behind Levon Aronian, Radoslaw Wojtaszek, Teimour Radjabov and Nakamura, with 17.4 added to his Elo.

In the following events, such as the Spice Cup (from October 12-21, 2012) and the Gibraltar Chess Festival (from January 22 to 31, 2013), he will have more opportunities to improve his Elo. 

The Vietnamese women’s chess team also moved up to 26^th place after its 4-0 win over the host Turkey.

Except for Thao Nguyen whose Elo was minus 8.9, other teammates also made impressive progress (Mai Hung: +31 Elo, Thien Kim: +18.9 Elo, Nhu Y: +17 Elo and Bich Ngoc: +9.4 Elo).

The 2012 World Chess Olympiad was wrapped up with the gold, silver and bronze medals going to Armenia, Russia and Ukraine, respectively in the men’s group. Russia won the gold medal in the women’s group while China and Ukraine bagged the silver and bronze. 

Since 1990, Vietnam’s highest gain has been the gold medal won by GM Hoang Thanh Trang in the individual event.
