Rescue workers in the northern province of Yen Bai have recovered the bodies of 16 people who were buried by a landslide near a mineral mine on Friday.

The accident, which happened at around 10.30 a.m. that day and was first reported as a mine collapse, also left two others injured and an unidentified number of people missing.

A report on the Voice of Vietnam news website quoted Le Trong Khang, vice chairman of Mu Cang Chai District, as saying that the accident was probably a landslide that happened when around 20 local people were picking up mineral fragments near the mine.

The landslide was triggered by recent torrential rains, according to district authorities, adding that the mine was managed by Thinh Dat Ltd., Co.

More than 100 people continue to search the site for missing victims, mainly by hand, as the road to the site has been obstructed by the landslide, making it difficult to bring in necessary equipment.

In other news, the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control Friday reported that as of September 7, 11 people had been killed and another had gone missing due to the flooding caused by the torrential rains that have inundated the central provinces since September 2.

It said the rains have caused 62 houses to collapse and have flooded 3,119 more. Meanwhile, over 19,000 hectares of crops have been submerged under water, according to the report.
