Steinmeier, 52, was elected as Merkel’s rival at a special SPD national conference in Berlin. SPD delegates across the country, including former SPD chancellors Helmut Schmidt and Gerhard Schroeder, attended the one-day meeting.

Steinmeier, who was the sole nominee from the SPD national committee for the chancellorship, won 95 percent of the votes from515 delegates.

Steinmeier has been foreign minister since November 2005 in the cabinet of Merkel’s Grand Coalition. He has enjoyed high personal ratings in public surveys since becoming Germany’s top diplomat.

In a speech prior to Saturday’s ballot, Steinmeier hailed the unity of the party after a leadership reshuffle. Last month, SPD Chairman Kurt Beck resigned after being accused of being responsible for declining popularity of the party.

“We, the SPD, are back in the game,” Steinmeier said amid thunderous applause from party delegates.

Steinmeier said his party has buried the differences from within and called for higher morale of the party to tackle the upcoming challenges.

“That makes us strong,” said Steinmeier. He also expressed confidence the party would won more and more trust from the people.
