Reports reaching here said that seven people were killed in violent looting in Toamasina on Wednesday.

Most of those killed in Antananarivo were suspected looters when a three-storey clothes store went up in flames after a violent demonstration last Monday, called by the opposition led by Mayor of the capital city, Andry Rajoelina.

The opposition protests against President Marc Ravalomanana’s government since last weekend have created a political crisis on the Indian Ocean island and brought the worst scenes of street violence since 2002, when Ravalomanana overthrew former president Didier Ratsiraka after a six-month standstill.
