He also recommended Robert Willard to be the head of U.S. Pacific Command.

Gates made the announcements at a Pentagon news conference, and the recommendations require confirmation from the Senate.

If confirmed, Stavridis, currently leading the U.S. South Command, will replace Bantz Craddock and Willard will replace Adm. Timothy Keating.

Stavridis will be the first U.S. naval admiral to hold the position of the NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander.

The current deputy commander at Pacific Command Douglas Fraser, is slated to become the new head of U.S. Southern Command.

Gates also recommended that President Barack Obama re-nominate Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and vice chairman Marine Gen. James Cartwright for second two-years terms.

Officials said Stavridis, known for being a great “team player”, is best suited to coordinate with NATO allies on Afghanistan policy in his new position.
