According to the U.S. National Weather Service, the snowstorm that was expected to hit southern New England could last up to 18 hours and cause traffic nightmare in the region on Monday.

The storm, combined with drifting snow and strong wind, would also lead to flight delays and cancellations and draw down temperatures below zero.

In Washington, D.C. where there could be as many as 20 cm of snow piled up, Mayor Adrian Fenty declared a snow emergency on Sunday afternoon, and was ready to deploy plows.

“It is important that our crews have access to the roads from curb-to-curb in order to plow the snow,” said Fenty, “This is one of the first plow events we have had this season, and we want to ensure we are able to maintain clear and safe roadways as we move into Monday morning.”

City workers and residents in New York are also bracing for a major snowstorm overnight, with meteorologists forecasting up to 33 cm of snow by Monday morning.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation called in 260 employees to clear roadways throughout the night.

The rare heavy snow hit the U.S. southern states of Alabama and Georgia on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

As the snowstorm headed toward the Northeast, snow accumulations is also expected to reach 35.6 cm in Philadelphia and 33 cm in New York by late Sunday.
