Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir on Thursday slammed the West over a warrant for his arrest on war crimes charges, saying it was a plot by western nations to grab the nation’s resources.

Beshir, the first sitting president to be charged by the International Criminal Court, told a crowd of supporters outside the Republican Palace that the Hague-based ICC was a tool of imperialists targeting Sudan for its oil, natural gas and other resources.

“We have refused to kneel to colonialism, that is why Sudan has been targeted … because we only kneel to God,” he said.

The ICC on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant against the Sudanese president for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the country’s restive western region of Darfur between 2003 and 2008.

In response, the Sudanese government expelled 10 foreign aid agencies, including Britain’s Oxfam and Save the Children, U.S.-based Care, CHF and International Rescue Committee, the Netherlands’ Medecins Sans Frontiers and Norway’s Refugee Council.

The Sudanese government reiterated several times that the ICC has no jurisdiction over Sudan because the country is neither a member of the tribunal nor a party which ratified the Rome Statute that set up the tribunal.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday called on the government of Sudan to urgently reconsider its decision to expel non-governmental organizations which he said provide humanitarian assistance to the people in need in Darfur in western Sudan.

A number of African and Arab states have urged the suspension of the ICC warrant, warning it could undermine efforts to end the six-year conflict in Darfur.
