Sources within his party the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said Susan Tsvangirai was travelling with her husband south of the capital Harare when the accident happened.

They were thought to be driving to their rural home in Buhera for the weekend when their vehicle crashed into a lorry near the town of Beatrice.

Tsvangirai is in stable condition at the hospital. The Tsvangirais were married in 1978 and have six children.

President Robert Mugabe was reported to visit Tsvangirai in the hospital. Tsvangirai, 56, was sworn in three weeks ago as prime minister, joining his long-time rival in the joint administration.
