The gunman who hijacked the CanJet plane in Jamaica is now in police custody, and all the remaining crew were released unharmed, the Canadian airline said in a statement posted on its website on Monday.

The gunman was arrested by the Jamaican police, the country’s information minister told CNN.

The police “were able to capture the gunman without anybody being harmed. The six crew members have actually come off the plane, and the gunman is in police custody as we speak,” said Information Minister Daryl Vaz.

According to a government statement, the gunman surrendered to the authorities after releasing the six crew members he chose to hold as hostages while setting free all the passengers and two other crew members.

The Canadian charter was seized at the Scangster International Airport in Montego Bay late Sunday. A shot had been fired, but no one was hit, CNN quoted Radio Jamaica as saying.

A passenger, Brenda Grenier, called her husband and said a man apparently had sneaked aboard the plane and had taken hostages, according to CNN.

A total of 159 passengers and eight crew members were aboard the Boeing 737 at the time, according to Jamaican police. All the passengers and two crew members were released shortly after the security breach occurred.

CanJet Airlines said 174 passengers were expected on the flight, but some apparently were not aboard by the time of the hijacking.
