Mirek Topolanek, the outgoing prime minister and head of the senior ruling Civic Democrats (ODS), and Jiri Paroubek, head of the senior opposition Social Democrats (CSSD), on Wednesday informed Klaus on behalf of the government coalition and the CSSD, respectively, that they have agreed on ways to put an end to the current government crisis, and they proposed Fischer (unaffiliated)as the new prime minister.

Under an agreement four democratic parties’ leaders concluded on Sunday, Fischer is to head an interim cabinet of unaffiliated experts that would lead the country to early elections in mid-October.

“President Vaclav Klaus has expressed satisfaction at the solution that corresponds to the requirements he formulated after [the Topolanek] cabinet’s resignation. He decided to appoint Jan Fischer in the post of Czech prime minister at Prague Castle on Thursday,” the Presidential Office says on its webpage.

Jan Fischer said on Wednesday that he is ready to accept the post of prime minister.

“I’ll start negotiations about the [new cabinet’s] personnel composition immediately after the Easter holidays,” he told reporters.

Fischer is to head the 10th Czech government as the country’s eighth PM.
