The sentence on the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at former U.S. President George W. Bush was cut to one year instead of his earlier three-year sentence, his lawyer said Tuesday.

On March 12, Muntadhar al-Zaidi, 30, a reporter with an Iraqi Cairo-based television of Baghdadia, was sentenced to three years in prison by the Iraqi Central Criminal Court for assaulting visiting foreign leader.

“The appeals court decided to reduce the Zaidi’s verdict from three years in prison to one year,” Dhiyaa al-Saadi, head of Zaidi’s 25-lawyer defense team, told Xinhua by telephone.

Saadi said that the court decision was base on that the three years verdict does not cope with the circumstances of the crime.

“The three years verdict did not consider his motives, the fact that he is young man with no previous criminal record,” Saadi said.

During his appearance in the courtroom on March 12, Zaidi pleaded that he is not guilty, saying “my reaction was natural, just like any Iraqi would have done.”

In his previous appearance on Feb. 19, Zaidi told the court that he could not control his emotions when he saw Bush who ordered war on Iraq in March 2003 in front of him.

He also said that he was not trying to kill the U.S. ex-president and that Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki was not meant by the attack.

Zaidi has been in custody since he threw his shoes at Bush during a joint press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in Baghdad on Dec. 14, 2008.
