The United Nations Humanitarian office in Colombo on Thursday issued an urgent appeal for funds to meet critical needs of civilians fleeing fighting in Sri Lanka’s northeastern battle zone.

“We need funds for all the basics like cooking, medicine, water, sanitation, nutrition, shelter and clothing,” Neil Buhne, the U.N.resident humanitarian co-ordinator was quoted as saying in a statement.

This was after some 103,000 Tamil civilians fled the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) hold in the no fire zone (NFZ) at Puttumatalan in the Mullaittivu district from Monday to Wednesday.

The Sri Lankan military breached the LTTE defense line in the early hours of Monday in what the government claimed as the world’s biggest humanitarian operation.

“Most of these people were forced out of their homes by fighting more than a year ago,” Buhne said, adding that some 195,000 people have left the hold of the LTTE since January.

“We have taken progressive steps and checking on facilities that have already been arranged for them,” Sri Lanka’s Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said.

Ameer Ali, the minister of Disaster Relief said that the government will provide 1,000 more acres of land to accommodate the displaced at the northern town Vavuniya where several refugee villages have already been set up.

The government relief officials promised that all displaced would be provided with best facilities.

The military say the campaign against the LTTE is nearing its end as the troops have bisected the 20-sq-km NFZ in the middle separating the rebels into two pockets.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in Sri Lanka since mid-1980s when the LTTE began to rebel against the government based on claims that the minority Tamils were being discriminated in this Sinhamese dominated island.
