New York City confirms two more H1N1-linked deaths

The New York City Health Department on Tuesday confirmed that two more people with H1N1 virus have died.

It is not yet clear whether their deaths are directly linked to their virus or pre-existing conditions.

Thomas Frieden, the outgoing Health Commissioner, said at a press conference that both the 41-year-old woman in Queens Borough and the 34-year-old man in Brooklyn Borough had pre-existing conditions.

A full autopsy of both people is necessary to determine whether the flu is directly responsible for their deaths, said Frieden, who has been hand-picked by U.S. President Obama to head the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Other two deaths have been confirmed to have been caused by H1N1. Assistant Principal Mitch Wiener at I.S. 238 school, which has been closed for more than a week, and an unidentified woman in Queens Borough in her 50s both died in the past week.

Since the outbreak of H1N1 in New York City, there have been 130 hospitalizations from H1N1. All of the cases of serious cases have been found in people with previous health conditions, according to the Health Department.
