Microsoft saw gains in its share of U.S. Internet search market during the first week since the software giant introduced new search engine Bing, Internet marketing research firm comScore said in a study released on Tuesday.

Microsoft started to roll out Bing at the beginning of June and the new search service was fully deployed worldwide on June 3.

According to the comScore study, average daily penetration of Microsoft sites among U.S. searchers, a measure of how many people are being reached, increased from 13.8 percent during the period of May 26-30 to 15.5 percent during the period of June 2-6.

Microsoft’s share of search result pages in the United States, a proxy for overall search intensity, increased from 9.1 percent to 11.1 percent during the same time frame, the study showed.

“These initial data suggest that Microsoft Bing has generated early interest, resulting in a spike in search engagement and an immediate term improvement to Microsoft’s position in the search market,” Mike Hurt, comScore’s senior vice president, said in a statement.

“So far it appears that the lifts in searcher penetration and engagement have held relatively steady throughout the five-day period. The ultimate performance of Bing depends on the extent to which it generates more trial through its extensive launch campaign and whether it retains those trial users,” Hurt added.
