Tom DeLay, the former Republican House majority leader, assured his role on ABC’s highly rated reality series “Dancing With the Stars” on Monday, which is striking up another kind of publicity storm.

“Within 10 minutes we were done,” Conrad Green, the executive producer of the show said, “it turns out Mr. DeLay watches the show all the time. He likes dancing with his wife, and his daughter is a professional country-and-western dancer.”

DeLay will be the first professional politician on the series, unless one counts Jerry Springer, a onetime mayor of Cincinnati, who is better known for his impolitic tabloid television show. He resigned from Congress in 2006 after being indicted on charges of violating campaign finance laws; the case has not yet gone to trial.

The show always tries to find identifiable names outside the usual definition of a star. Green said, politicians have been likely candidates for a while, but only ones no longer busy with the real duties of office.

It is reported that the show has contacted with Bill Clinton. “We really want to have Bill Clinton,” said Green.
