“Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has just endorsed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as Iran’s next president,” Press TV said.

“The official ceremony was held in the presence of the heads of the three Executive, Legislative and Judiciary branches of the Islamic establishment and a number of political and military figures and foreign ambassadors in Tehran,” the report said.

In the decree of endorsement, Khamenei said that “I endorse the vote of people and appoint this brave, hardworking and intelligent man to the presidency of Islamic Republic of Iran.”

For his part, Ahmadinejad pointed out that “In the recent election, the discourse of the (Islamic) revolution was re-elected and … there is a brighter future before us which adds to the weight of our responsibilities.”

On June 13, the Iranian Interior Ministry announced incumbent President Ahmadinejad won 62.63 percent of the total ballots, while his main rival Mir-Hossein Mousavi got 33.75 percent. The case was later approved by Iran’s Guardian Council, the top legislative body of the country.

After the official declaration, the defeated candidates filed complaints over irregularities in the election, while Mousavi demanded an annulment of the election.

Iran’s supreme leader has expressed his strong support for the elected president and hailed the massive turn-out of the people in the June 12 election.
