U.S. Internet giant Yahoo said Wednesday it will translate many of its content into Arabic and start providing a variety of services in Arabic early next year.

The services Yahoo will present to the Arab world include Yahoo mail and Yahoo messenger in Arabic, according to Keith Nilsson, Yahoo’s senior vice president.

Yahoo will be working with Jordan-based Maktoob.com to develop its Arabic content.

On Tuesday, Yahoo Inc. signed an agreement to acquire Maktoob.com, an on-line community in the Arab world with over 16.5 million users.

Maktoob was founded in 2000 as the world’s first free Arabic/English Web-based email service.

Following the acquisition, Maktoob will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Yahoo.

The purchase, the terms of which were not disclosed, would be completed in the fourth quarter of 2009, according to a statement by Yahoo.
